What is the 11 plus?

The 11 plus entrance exams are a series of tests taken by students in their final year of primary school, typically around the age of 11, to gain entry into selective independent secondary schools or state-funded grammar schools. These entrance exams assess a range of academic abilities, including English, mathematics, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning. The purpose of the 11-plus is to identify students who are best suited for academically rigorous environments and to match them with schools that can support their educational needs. These exams evaluate critical skills such as reasoning, literacy, and numeracy, providing a comprehensive understanding of each student’s academic abilities and potential.

What is the 13 plus Exam?

The 13 plus entrance exams serve a similar purpose to the 11 plus. However, 13 plus exams are taken for entry into independent schools in Year 9. It determines the readiness of a student for the curriculum they will face from Y9 in these independent schools. This means that rather than the aptitude style testing which is prominent in 11 plus exams, students taking the 13 plus are assessed on a wide range of subjects beyond English, Maths and Reasoning.

What skills are assessed?

Verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests are commonly used in 11 plus entrance exams, combining English, maths, and logical problem-solving techniques. These tests are designed to not only measure a child’s ability but also their potential and many children will naturally excel in them (especially if they have a strong vocabulary and good basic maths skills)

English Sections will assess comprehension skills involving analysis of unseen texts or passages. Students are expected to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the themes and ideas within the passage. Students will also need to demonstrate their confidence in using correct spelling, Punction and Grammar (SPAG). The final part of the English assessment involves a piece of creative or descriptive writing where your child can showcase their ability to express ideas clearly and coherently.

The Maths section of an 11-plus entrance exam focuses on evaluating a student’s understanding of key mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills. It typically includes a variety of questions covering arithmetic, geometry, and algebra, such as calculations, word problems, and reasoning tasks.
